Espresso Shots:

1. What’s the difference between leadership and management?

2. What are the most important decisions you make as a leader of your organization?

3. Is leadership a learned skill or inherent in a person’s character?

4. How has leadership changed over the past 20 years?

5. How do leadership influence employee performance and learning?

6. What one mistake do you see leaders making more frequently than others?

7. Even if you are a one-person business, is leadership important?

Jan says though a lot of managers label themselves as leaders, this is not always the case. She says to think about leading people that are willing to follow you vs just managing processes & tasks and look at the difference there. A true leader does both!

Generally speaking, she says the most important decisions you make should center around your people. When you become a leader, your measure of success is determined by the performance of your team. When you are a good leader, your team’s performance should exceed any accomplishment you would be able to reach on your own.

All of her research and training suggest that anyone can become a leader and that there is no one type of leader that is superior to the rest. A person that wants to become a leader has to have a desire to lead others. That is all that it takes to get started!

In the past 20 years, effective leadership has changed quite a bit. Jan shares that 20 years ago when she started teaching leadership programs, all a leader really needed to be successful was 3 different communication tools that worked. Now, people don’t respond to it as much and our newest generation in the workforce demands a different leadership approach.

She says our organizations reflect the skillset of our leadership. If you have a leader that is inflexible and does not grow, eventually performance starts to drop within the organization. If you are a leader that is stuck, it will reflect back to you in your team. It is a leader’s job to cast the vision and show people what they are all working towards.

The mistake Jan sees the most often is that leaders pretend everything is just fine and they keep trying to move forward. If you don’t stretch and take time to reflect and make change where needed, you could break, or break your people.

Even if you work on a team of one, you still need to think about why you’re doing what you do, what your goal is beyond financial results, and knowing how to continue motivating yourself to move forward. Make sure your priorities are in the right place and that you are remembering why you wanted to do this in the first place to ensure you are in it for the long haul!
